Do home remedies work to treat psoriasis? Psoriasis affects a large portion of the population and is more common than is often imagined. It occurs in men and women, and while there is no cure for this skin condition, there are many ways to control skin symptoms in a natural way. Proriasis can be effectively treated with diet and home remedies.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes skin and joint symptoms and predisposes to comorbidities. There are many different forms of psoriasis, and the most common of these is patchy psoriasis, which has fine-grained scaly patches usually on the scalp, elbows, knees, buttocks, palms, and soles of the feet. Psoriasis can also occur in the nails and joints.

Psoriasis usually occurs between the ages of 15 and 35, and in Finland 2-3% of the population suffers from psoriasis. Psoriasis is an inherited skin hyperplasia disease with a very individualized picture and course of the disease, and no two cases are exactly alike. Psoriasis is possibly an autoimmune disease, but there is still no more specific scientific evidence for this and many different factors can contribute to the onset of psoriasis.

In this article, we will look at home treatment methods for psoriasis.

Personal diet

Everyone’s body reacts differently to foods, and certain diets don’t suit everyone. Psoriasis can be caused by a food hypersensitivity or allergy that the patient does not know they are suffering from.

The most common causes of food hypersensitivity are gluten and lactose, but we recommend monitoring the effects of other foods on the body as well. You can best find out about possible food allergies by removing a certain ingredient from your diet for a few months and seeing if it has any effect on your skin or other parts of your body.

home remedies for psoriasis: diet

Clean the inside of the skin

Psoriasis directly affects skin cells, so treatment should be planned around a cleansing diet. The body removes toxins e.g. through the skin, so when you cleanse the internal organs, you don’t overload the skin, but you also let the body cleanse through the liver, kidneys, and intestines. This keeps the skin in balance and does not become so easily inflamed. Add lots of cleansing juices and smoothies to your daily diet. They are proven home remedies for the treatment of psoriasis.

Mud baths

One of the easiest and oldest ways to improve the condition of your skin is to take a mud or clay bath. This is good for both the skin and the health of the whole body.

You can apply mud cakes regularly to irritated and flaky skin. Mix clay with yogurt instead of water, as water can further dry sensitive skin and exacerbate psoriasis. Yogurt moisturizes the skin while the clay treats.

Prepare a clay bath using glass or wooden bowls and other utensils; do not use plastic or metal, as clay easily absorbs harmful chemicals. Apply the bath on the skin and allow to soak for 20-30 minutes, finally rinse with warm water.

The clay bath can be done once a week and when the skin is at its worst, the bath can always be done every few days.

Licorice for bath water and tea drinks

Licorice is known as natural cortisone. The ingredients in licorice prevent cortisone from disappearing from the body and prolong its effect. Licorice thus enhances the calming and healing effect of cortisone, while at the same time its active ingredients suppress inflammation. Licorice is suitable for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and is particularly good for treating the symptoms of psoriasis.

Licorice can be used for the benefit of the skin in many different ways: chew licorice root regularly, pour it into bath water or prepare a licorice tea. Licorice raises your blood pressure to some extent, so if you suffer from high blood pressure, talk to your doctor about using licorice first.

Carrot mask

Prepare a soothing mask from carrots for the symptoms of psoriasis. The carrot mask can be applied to any part of the body affected by inflammation. Cook a few carrots by lightly steaming and then turn them into a smooth puree. Apply on skin and leave on for 20 minutes, rinse carrot off with warm water.

Carrots are full of beta-carotene, which nourishes and soothes the skin effectively.  You can vary between different treatments; use a mud bath one day and a carrot the next – this will give your skin as much soothing ingredients as possible.

Sun and sea

Many people with psoriasis have noticed that during the summer, psoriasis stays under control and the inflammation is not constantly on. Sun vitamin D has a beneficial effect on many different skin conditions and the same is true for psoriasis. In the summer, a psoriatic should enjoy the sun in moderation, as early as 15 minutes in direct sunlight may suffice. Also remember to have adequate sun protection.

In the middle of winter, there is no sun in Finland, so many psoriasis spend a few weeks in the winter on a beach holiday, where there is enough sun and the sea salt water cleans and disinfects the inflamed skin. Prefer a time of day to stay in the sun when the sun’s radiation is not at its worst; the afternoon sun does just as good for the skin and its radiation is much safer.

If you can’t get to the sea, you can buy bottled seawater that can be used as a caring skin spray.

These are the best home remedies for psoriasis; try them for yourself if you suffer from this skin condition!
