Causes of heartburn

The most common causes of heartburn or abdominal acidity are:

  • Poor diet or excessive eating of acidic foods
  • Regular medication use: for example, aspirin, ibuprofen, or birth control pills

  • Stress

The use of antacids

Many use acid drugs, or antacids, to treat heartburn. Antacids are sold by pharmacies, and in addition to these, many also use sodium bicarbonate to ease their heartburn. However, one must be aware that these means only alleviate the problem temporarily, and never actually eliminate it.

If you use too much antacids,  over time you may cause a significant change in the acids in your stomach, which in turn can lead to several diseases.

You should avoid the following substances if you have high stomach acidity and suffer from heartburn:

  • Dairy products
  • Sugar
  • Fried foods

  • Lemon: Despite being a citrus fruit and therefore acidic, lemon also has a neutralizing effect on acids when it enters the stomach. Therefore, it is recommended to eat lemon regularly (in moderation), combined with meals and as part of juices.
  • Potato: an awesome natural antacid. Its juice acts as a complete counteraction to stomach acidity.
  • Millet : the only de-acidifying grain, and therefore you should eat it more often than other grains (such as rice, wheat, etc.).
  • Pineapple: helps digestion due to its enzymes, but you should not combine it with carbohydrates (bread, pasta, pastries, rice, etc.). The best pineapple would be to eat just before or immediately after eating vegetables, salads, meat or fish.
  • Cabbage : helps heal stomach ulcers, but for many people it is not suitable for raw digestion. Therefore, it is better to eat cabbage cooked and seasoned with a little cumin, or then raw but soaked in vinaigrette.
  • Pepper : belongs to the Solanaceae group of vegetables and acts as a great stomach healer.
  • Grapes : These are one of the fruits that best eliminate stomach acidity, but you should be happy to eat only organic grapes, otherwise they will contain a lot of pesticides.
  • Celery : an awesome vegetable that strengthens and removes acidity. Use celery as a supplement in soups and stews, or eat it raw in salads, for example.

Although the foods listed above are generally recommended ways to reduce heartburn, they may not be well tolerated by all people. If you feel that any of these ingredients are causing you more heartburn, or other symptoms, you should stop taking them.

One natural antacid that you can ingest without harming your body is oral white clay. This product is sold in health food stores. Mix one teaspoon of clay with water using a wooden spoon. Stir the liquid again after 10 minutes, and enjoy the drink.

Soda water

One very pleasant way to eliminate heartburn from the body consists of ingesting sodium bicarbonate water, or alternatively bathing in hot water to which sodium hydrogen carbonate, i.e. soda, has been added . Seawater is also de-acidifying.
