Dark armpits: Where do they come from

Underarms can darken for a variety of reasons, from  poor hygiene to heavy sweating that pushes through a dead skin cell and stains the skin. Also, shabby clothing, uncomfortable and sweaty materials, tight shirts, underarm waxing and epilation, alcohol-containing deodorants, and skin diseases can cause underarm darkening. In addition, excessive sun, hormones and dehydration affect the condition of the armpits. One thing is certain, however: darkened armpits are a disgusting cosmetic nuisance, especially in social situations or parties.

Here are some tips for avoiding dark armpits:

  • Do not drive your armpits with a dull blade. Sometimes in a hurry you should plan your armpits with the planer that hits your hand first, but the planer should always be sharp. Shaving of the armpits should preferably be done in the shower when both the skin and the blade are wet, thus avoiding redness and stinging. The dull blade makes the armpits look dark, as does the waxing, as it removes hair in addition to hair. Especially fair-skinned people should avoid waxing.
  • Avoid using large amounts of deodorant and antiperspirant. Antiperspirants clog skin pores (often with aluminum), preventing the skin from breathing normally and causing sweating. This leads to darkening of the skin of the armpits. You may also have noticed that when you add deodorant throughout the day, the smell fades for a moment, but always comes back again. We recommend washing your armpits with unscented soap and water, and avoiding the use of deodorants and antiperspirants as much as possible.

  • Wash your armpits regularly. We recommend washing your armpits every morning, and more often on days when the weather is hot or when you have moved around a lot.
  • Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing. Cotton and other natural fibers allow the skin to breathe and prevent excessive sweating. Especially in summer, you should wear natural fiber, casual clothes.
  • Avoid chemical depilatory creams. Prolonged use may lead to darkening of the armpits.
  • Keep your armpits as free from all irritations as possible. The skin in the armpits is sensitive and easily develops rash, dead skin cells and bad odor. The skin of the armpits also reacts quickly to unsuitable deodorants. The skin in the armpits may become inflamed or suffer from an allergic reaction to strong conditioners. See a dermatologist if the situation gets worse.
